Got Questions?

Everything you need to know

Answers to the questions we hear most often from expecting mothers at Happy Lyfe Women's Hospital.

1

When should I schedule my first pregnancy visit?

Ideally, you should schedule your first prenatal (antenatal) visit as soon as you confirm your pregnancy, preferably between 6–8 weeks after your last menstrual period.

During your first visit, our obstetrician will:
  • Confirm your pregnancy with an ultrasound (if required)
  • Estimate your due date
  • Review your medical and family history
  • Assess your overall health
  • Recommend essential blood tests and screenings
  • Prescribe prenatal vitamins, including folic acid
  • Discuss nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle changes for a healthy pregnancy
Tip: Early prenatal care helps detect potential concerns early and supports a healthier pregnancy for both mother and baby.
2

How often are antenatal checkups needed?

Regular antenatal visits are essential to monitor your health and your baby's growth throughout pregnancy.

Recommended Schedule
Pregnancy StageVisit Frequency
Up to 28 weeksOnce every 4 weeks
28–36 weeksOnce every 2 weeks
After 36 weeks until deliveryOnce every week

Depending on your medical condition or pregnancy risk, your doctor may recommend more frequent visits.

At each visit, we typically monitor:
  • Blood pressure
  • Weight gain
  • Baby's growth and heartbeat
  • Blood sugar (if indicated)
  • Urine protein and sugar
  • Baby's position
  • Maternal well-being

Our goal is to identify any concerns early and ensure the safest possible pregnancy.

3

What is considered a high-risk pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy is one in which the mother, baby, or both may have a higher chance of developing complications before, during, or after delivery. With proper monitoring and expert care, many women with high-risk pregnancies go on to have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies.

Common factors include:
  • Pregnancy at age below 18 or above 35
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes (pre-existing or gestational)
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Heart, kidney, or autoimmune diseases
  • Twin or multiple pregnancy
  • Previous miscarriage or preterm birth
  • Previous Caesarean section with complications
  • Placenta-related conditions
  • Reduced fetal growth
  • Rh-negative pregnancy
  • Obesity or severe anemia

At Happy Lyfe Women's Hospital, high-risk pregnancies receive individualized care with advanced fetal monitoring, regular ultrasounds, laboratory investigations, and coordinated management by experienced obstetricians.

4

Can I have a normal delivery after a previous C-section?

Yes. Many women may be suitable candidates for a Vaginal Birth After Caesarean (VBAC).

Whether VBAC is appropriate depends on several factors, including:
  • The reason for your previous C-section
  • The type of uterine incision used previously
  • Number of previous Caesarean deliveries
  • Current baby's position and size
  • Your overall health
  • Progress of labour
  • Availability of emergency surgical support

Your obstetrician will carefully evaluate your medical history and discuss the benefits and potential risks before recommending the safest delivery option.

At Happy Lyfe Women's Hospital, we support VBAC whenever it is medically appropriate while prioritizing the safety of both mother and baby.
